Introduction

The Pertubuhan Arkitek Malaysia annual architecture student works exhibition 2019 (’paaswe19’), was held from 2 to 6 October 2019. The theme given by Pertubuhan Arkitek Malaysia was ‘Metamorphosis’, comprising a concept that showcases the evolution of facades with the times. The concept also represents the different stages of evolution in Malaysia architecture. In line with the theme, the structure is built and uses a vertical linear concept, based on the diagrid system with local postmodernist architecture as a basis.

About the sculpture

Metamorfosi in architecture is the change of form into a different character, appearance, or condition which explores possibilities of transformation in the context of lighting, spacing, body sound, and airflow (five basis).

Facciata is the frontage that sets the tone of the building. In relation to brief, it can be well manipulated with the five basis while imbues strong sculptural quality.

“M∞” is a hybridization of façade styles depicted from two local iconic modernism architectures across the past and current periods. The design intention of “M∞” incorporates how the façade is being redefined over the years, through positive conversion known as transformation, asseverating the theme of the exhibition

▲ Design intention ▲

The design elements are inspired by the Malaysia's iconic buildings over the years which details are explained below:

1. Old Era

Adoption of "Kerawang" facade from Malaysian Houses of Parliament (1963) being exposed, implying period where facade designed as building skin attached to structural support, wrapped around provided building form.

2. Rotation

Simultaneous rotation of both vertical components resembles elapsed time, as well as the evolvement progress of local modernism architecture facade.

3. Current Era

Adoption of diamond geometry facade from Ilham Tower (2015) being exposed, implying period where facade integrated as structural support. Self-bracing diagrid structure enables flexible, column-free spaces to discover new functionalities and possibilities of building form.

▲ Design elements from local buildings ▲

Parliament Tower/ Kuala Lumpur (1963)

The design of the tower block resembles a pineapple with beehive-like 'kerawang' facade, implying a period where the facade was designed as building skin attached to structural support, wrapped around to provide a building form.

Ilham Tower/ Kuala Lumpur (2016)

Designed with a geometrical diamond façade, implying a period where the facade is integrated as part of the structural support.

Maybank Tower/ Kuala Lumpur (2016)

Designed with a geometrical diamond façade, implying a period where the facade is integrated as part of the structural support.

Wisma Angkasapuri/ Kuala Lumpur (1968)

The building facade is ornamented with the repetition of precast shield-like concrete panels installed onto the extended reinforcement bar for shading purposes.

▲ Form development ▲

▲ Feature ▲

Body

Body form enables a view from 360° for different perceptions.

Flow

The split component simplifies the flow of mechanical movements.

Lighting

LED strip lighting enhances the display experience.

Spacing

Spacing in between metal decks creates voids for model display.
